The long con account
Defeats every countermeasure a forum can offer, by design, because it satisfies all of them honestly.
- What they want
- One address accepted without checking, from a source that has earned the right not to be checked.
- How they earn
- Whatever the page behind the address collects. The account is the delivery mechanism.
- What it costs them
- A year or more of genuine participation. Expensive, which is why it is aimed at moments when the payoff is largest.
- How you meet them
- As a helpful long standing member you have read for years and possibly quoted yourself.
- What gives them away
- Nothing in the account. The history is real, the help was real, the standing was earned. Only the address can be checked, and it can be checked regardless of who posted it.
- What stops them
- Treating addresses as claims requiring proof rather than as information from a source. The account never enters the calculation.
Why forum defences do not work
| Defence | Why it passes |
|---|---|
| Minimum account age | The account is older than the threshold and always was |
| Post count requirements | Met honestly, with posts that genuinely helped people |
| Trusted user status | Earned, and awarded correctly at the time |
| Moderation | Nothing to moderate. No rule was broken until the last post, and by then it is out. |
| Community reputation | The strongest signal available and the one being spent |
The cheaper variant
Buying the account rather than building it. Aged accounts with real history are traded, which removes the year of patience and produces the same result. This is why the profile is not rare despite the apparent cost, and why the account buyer gets a page of their own.
What forums are actually good for
One question, answered better than by any other source: is anyone else seeing this. That aggregates independent experience and requires trusting nobody in particular. Read them for that, read them for context on how a platform behaves, and take no addresses from them, because an address is a claim requiring proof and a forum carries text.
Also worth knowing: corrections do not travel. The person who read the bad post rarely reads the reply three days later, so a wrong answer outlives its correction by a wide margin.
